Former PM Jacinda Ardern honoured with prestigious Oxford University Degree

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern has received one of the University of Oxford’s highest honours, becoming the only New Zealander recognised this year with an honorary degree from the world-renowned institution.

The honour was presented during Oxford University’s historic Encaenia ceremony, an annual tradition that celebrates individuals whose work has made an outstanding contribution to society across fields including politics, science, education, culture, sport and the arts.

Ardern was one of just nine distinguished recipients selected for the 2026 awards and the only political leader included in this year’s list.

The University of Oxford said the honorary degrees recognise people whose achievements have had an extraordinary impact on communities and the wider world.

Receiving the award at the university’s iconic Sheldonian Theatre, Ardern described the recognition as both humbling and deeply meaningful.

She said her ongoing association with Oxford through the Blavatnik School of Government and its World Leaders Circle had supported her work on empathetic leadership and public service.

Ardern also reflected on attending a ceremony at the same venue only months earlier, when Oxford posthumously awarded a Master of Philosophy degree to pioneering Māori scholar Mākereti Papakura, describing that occasion as especially significant.

This year’s Encaenia ceremony took place during an intense European heatwave, prompting Oxford University to temporarily relax its traditional dress code to ensure the comfort of guests and participants.

The latest honour adds to a growing list of international recognitions for Ardern since stepping down as Prime Minister in early 2023. Later that year she was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the State.

Now aged 45, Ardern is currently based in Australia with her family while continuing her international work on leadership, democracy and public policy. She has also recently released a memoir and a children’s book, while a documentary about her time in office won a major international television award earlier this year.
