Auckland (The NZ Today)
The Electoral Commission has referred two people to police after receiving allegations they voted more than once in the 2026 General Election.
The Commission confirmed the referrals in a statement, saying voting multiple times is an offence under section 215 of the Electoral Act 1993.
No further details have been released about where the alleged incidents occurred, how many ballots may have been involved, or how the cases were detected.
The Commission said the matters are now with New Zealand Police and it would not comment further while they are being investigated.
Under New Zealand election law, an enrolled voter is entitled to cast one party vote and one electorate vote. Attempting to vote again in the same election can result in criminal investigation.
The referrals come as advance voting continues nationwide ahead of election day on November 7.
At this stage, the allegations relate to two individuals and there is no indication from the Electoral Commission of any wider problem with the voting process.
