Costco eyes Christchurch with new store proposed near airport

Auckland (The NZ Today)

Costco could be heading to Christchurch, with plans emerging for a new store near the city’s airport.

According to NZ Herald, the proposed development would be built on vacant land between Memorial Avenue and Avonhead Road, potentially giving the South Island its first Costco outlet.

Christchurch City Council has been asked to provide feedback on a fast-track application connected to the project.

Waimairi Ward councillor Sam MacDonald told the Herald the proposal could be positive for Christchurch, particularly as households continue to feel pressure from high living costs.

He said more competition in the grocery and retail market could benefit consumers, although the impact on surrounding roads and nearby residents would need to be carefully considered.

Traffic is likely to be one of the main issues given the scale of Costco stores and the large number of shoppers they typically attract.

The fast-track application has not yet appeared publicly on the Government’s application website, so details such as the final store size, construction timeline and opening date are not yet known.

Costco currently operates one New Zealand store in West Auckland, which opened in 2022 and drew large crowds from its first day.

A second store is also planned for South Auckland.

If the Christchurch proposal proceeds, it would mark another major step in Costco’s New Zealand expansion and introduce the membership-based wholesale retailer to the South Island.

Costco is known for selling groceries, household products, electronics and other goods in bulk, generally at wholesale-style prices.
