Police seek witnesses after Mt Albert train tragedy as investigation continues

Auckland (The NZ Today)

Police are continuing their investigation into the death of a teenage boy who was struck by a train at Baldwin Avenue level crossing in Mt Albert, as support is being provided to affected students and the wider community.

Auckland City West Area Commander Inspector Jacqui Whittaker said police were investigating the incident on behalf of the Coroner and were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Police have not yet released further details about the teenager.

“This is a tragic event for our community, and our thoughts are with his family today who are coming to terms with what has happened,” Inspector Whittaker said.

The incident has also deeply affected the Mount Albert Grammar School community, with police confirming their School Community Officer is supporting the school.

Inspector Whittaker said several students who were leaving school at the time may have witnessed what happened and encouraged parents to ensure young people receive appropriate support.

“Anyone who has not yet spoken to Police, and witnessed yesterday’s event, should come forward,” she said.

Police are continuing enquiries and have asked anyone with information to contact them through 105 online by selecting “update report”, or by calling 105 with reference number 260909/7528.
