A man who died after being struck by a vehicle while cycling in Auckland’s Avondale is being remembered by his family, colleagues and friends as a caring father who always put others first.
Bhupesh Patel died from his injuries three days after the crash on Rosebank Road last Wednesday afternoon.
Patel was reportedly cycling home from work after leaving early so he could spend time with his two sons and take them to their kempo (martial arts) lesson.
His employer, JMP Engineering, said Patel was tragically hit by a vehicle before he could make it home.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 4pm, where ambulance staff provided treatment before he was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
Police later confirmed Patel had died over the weekend, with investigations into the circumstances of the crash continuing.
JMP Engineering described the loss as devastating for Patel’s family and colleagues, remembering him for his kindness, generosity and willingness to help others.
“Those who worked alongside him knew not only his ability and dedication, but also his warmth, humour and friendship,” the company said.
A Givealittle fundraiser started by JMP Engineering to support Patel’s family during their time of grief has received strong community support, with more than $10,000 raised.
The company said messages of support from friends, colleagues and the wider community had meant a great deal to those close to Patel.
“Bhupesh will be very deeply missed,” JMP said.
Police continue to investigate the crash and have not released further details about what led to the collision.
