Tributes have poured in from schools, sports clubs and community organisations across Waikato following the sudden death of 15-year-old Bhavreen Kaur, a talented young athlete who excelled in both squash and hockey.

Bhavreen, who died on Monday following a medical event, was a student at Hillcrest High School in Hamilton and was widely admired for her achievements in the classroom and on the sports field. A private service was held in Hamilton this afternoon.

Hillcrest High School principal Christine Williams said the school community was “reeling from the shock” of losing one of its treasured students. In a tribute, the school described Bhavreen as a gifted and multi-talented young woman who had been loved by both staff and students since joining the school in Year 9.

The school said she excelled academically and was an outstanding athlete. As captain of the school’s First XI hockey team, she was known as a strong competitor and a natural leader, while her performances on the squash court had also earned widespread recognition.

Sports organisations including Squash Waikato, Te Aroha Squash Club, Hamilton Youth Club, the Golden Heritage Empowerment Trust and the World Squash Development Organisation paid tribute to Bhavreen, describing her as one of Waikato’s top junior squash players.

In heartfelt messages shared online, friends and fellow athletes remembered her as determined, hardworking and a pleasure to be around both on and off the court. Many spoke of the positive energy and passion she brought to every game and training session.

Squash Waikato confirmed that Bhavreen passed away following a medical event. Her death has sent shockwaves through the Waikato sporting community, with many saying her loss will be deeply felt by teammates, coaches and everyone who knew her.

Hamilton’s Lugton Park Rackets Club also expressed its condolences, describing her passing as a sad loss for the club and the wider sporting community.

As messages of support continue to flow, many have remembered Bhavreen not only for her sporting talent, but also for the kindness, dedication and bright spirit that touched those around her.

Her memory, teammates say, will live on through the many lives she inspired both on and off the field.
