Auckland (The NZ Today)
Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man who was critically injured during a violent confrontation in Auckland’s Blockhouse Bay died from his injuries.
Operation Falconer has been established following the incident on Holbrook Street, near the intersection with Shoreham Street, on the afternoon of August 22.
Police said the confrontation happened at around 3.40pm, during which the man suffered a stab wound.
Following the incident, the injured man was taken by associates to a nearby bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Road, where emergency services were called.
He was transported to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition and underwent emergency surgery before being admitted to intensive care.
Police confirmed he later died in hospital on the evening of August 23.
Acting Detective Inspector Craig Bolton said officers were now working to establish what happened during the confrontation and identify those responsible.
Police have carried out scene examinations at two locations, including the area where the victim was found by ambulance staff and the location of the initial altercation.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses, including anyone who may have dashcam footage, CCTV footage or information about what occurred in the area.
“We need to hear from you if you saw anything or have information that can assist the investigation,” Bolton said.
Police have been supporting the man’s family and have placed interim non-publication orders over his identity through the Coroner’s Office, meaning his name and identifying details cannot currently be reported.
Police said the investigation remains in its early stages.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact Police on 105 quoting reference 260822/3796. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111”, said police officials.
