“I thought it was $32,000”: Surrey Punjabi man’s shock after winning $32 million Lotto jackpot

Auckland (The NZ Today)

A Surrey resident’s life has changed overnight after winning a massive $32 million Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball jackpot, with the lucky winner saying his first thoughts are about helping his family.

Amritpal Singh, from Surrey, British Columbia, purchased the winning ticket from a 7-Eleven store located at 152 Street and 104 Avenue in Surrey. The ticket matched the winning draw from September 19, making him the latest multimillion-dollar lottery winner in Canada.

Amritpal said he initially struggled to believe what he was seeing when he checked his ticket.

After scanning it through the lottery app, he first thought the amount showed was $32,000, not $32 million. Unsure whether he had read it correctly, he checked the ticket again using other phones before the reality started to sink in.

“I couldn’t process it,” he said.

The first person he shared the news with was his sister, who he said was left speechless and emotional after hearing about the win.

Despite suddenly becoming a multimillionaire, Amritpal said he is taking time before making major decisions about the money.

His priorities include supporting his parents and sister, buying a home, and eventually purchasing a few vehicles.

Among his personal wishes is owning his dream car — a Dodge Challenger.

The winning ticket was officially claimed at the British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s Vancouver office on September 23.

Amritpal said the win will completely change his life, but for now he wants to enjoy the moment with his loved ones before deciding how to use the fortune.
